    782 Alternative Measures Program

  • What are alternative measures?
Alternative measures are programs for young offenders which provide a substitute for or an alternative to a formal trial. Participating in these programs often involves performing community service, enrolling in a training or treatment course, or apologizing to the victim.

  • Who qualifies for alternative measures?
Alternative measures programs are only available for young offenders who have committed the following offences: theft or fraud under $1000; taking a motor vehicle without permission; giving a false statement or name to the police; mischief; causing a disturbance; minor assaults; and credit card offences. There is no automatic entitlement to alternative measures for these offences. For example, if a theft charge involves a large amount of property, alternative measures might not be considered appropriate. Where a young offender agrees to participate in an alternative measures program, the charges are generally withdrawn.

For offences such as assault with a weapon, impaired driving, and offences that resulted in someone's death, alternative measures programs are not available.
