  • Special Rules for Some Employees

    594 Retail workers

There are different rules for hours of work that only apply to retail workers. You are considered a retail worker if you work in any area of a retail business, except if you work for a restaurant, tavern, hotel, motel, theme park or zoo.

  • Retail worker's rights
Retail workers generally have the right to refuse work on Sundays or public holidays. Even if you originally agreed to work on Sundays or public holidays, you cannot be punished or fired for not working these days. Retail workers also have the right to 36 hours in a row of time off for every seven days worked.

If your employer refuses to give you a 36 hour rest period, or punishes you for taking time off that you are entitled to, you can complain to the Employment Standards office listed in the Blue pages of your telephone book.
