Ontario|Employment LawEmployment Insurance 610 How much money will you receive? If you qualify for Employment Insurance benefits, then, in most circumstances, you will receive 55% of your salary to a maximum of $413 per week. However, there are also circumstances in which your benefits may be reduced or increased. There are two circumstances that could reduce the amount of your benefits. First, if you have collected a certain amount of employment insurance benefits in the past, you may only be entitled to as low as 50% of your salary to a maximum of $413 per week. The second circumstance in which your benefits could be reduced is if you earn other money while collecting benefits. However, you are allowed to earn up to 25% of your weekly benefits or $50 per week, whichever is more, without reducing the amount of your benefits. Beyond that amount, your benefits will usually be reduced one dollar for every dollar you earn. Other forms of income that could cause your benefits to be reduced include: money from a wrongful dismissal lawsuit, money made from your own business, retirement income from a government or employment pension, and severance pay. Even if you receive these payments after you have finished collecting benefits, you may be required to pay back all or part of the benefits you collected. There are some types of earnings that will not reduce your benefits. These include income from private RRSPs and disability pensions. Your benefits may also be increased if you are a low income family and have dependent children under the age of eighteen. If you worked on and off over the past 26 weeks, you may still be entitled to receive Employment Insurance benefits, but the amount will be based on a special calculation. You can contact the Human Resources Development Canada Centre in your area to find out how much you are entitled to. This number is listed in the Blue pages of your telephone book.
