    372 Zoning restrictions

Municipal official plans and zoning by-laws restrict the areas where certain activities are allowed to take place. For example, you cannot build an industrial factory in a residential neighbourhood. Any activity on your property must comply with the zoning by-laws of your municipality. In fact, many municipalities are now incorporating clean-up guidelines and contaminated land zoning restrictions into their bylaws. These bylaws will make it illegal to obtain permission to build or change the use of the contaminated land without cleaning it up.

Before you buy land or make plans to build a new building or modify an existing building on land you already own, you should contact your municipal government or an environmental law lawyer.
