721 Ministry of the Solicitor General

The Ministry of the Solicitor General is responsible for protecting Canadians and helping to maintain Canada as a peaceful and safe society.

The Ministry consists of one Department and four agencies. These are:

    1. The Department of the Solicitor General Canada,
    2. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP),
    3. The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS),
    4. The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), and
    5. The National Parole Board (NPB).

The entire Ministry has a budget in excess of $2.5 billion and over 34,000 employees.

The Department's role within the Ministry is to support the Solicitor General in giving effective direction to the four agencies. This means that it helps direct the work of the entire Ministry, which includes policing and law enforcement, national security, corrections and conditional release.

The Ministry of the Solicitor General works closely with the Department of Justice, which is primarily responsible for criminal justice policy at the federal level. The Ministry and its agencies also have extensive dealings with other federal departments, provincial and territorial governments, as well as the voluntary and private sectors.
