    661 Permanent residents' travel rights

Permanent residents who are outside Canada for six months or more in a 12 month period must prove to an immigration officer when they return that their absence was temporary, and that they have not given up their residence in Canada.

Permanent residents who are outside Canada frequently may want to apply for a Returning Resident Permit. A returning resident permit will help you prove that you did not intend to give up your residency. Application packages can be ordered by phone or picked up from any Canada Immigration Centre. The application must include some document giving the reason for your absence and showing your intention to return. Examples of suitable documents include a temporary employment contract, or a letter from your employer transferring you abroad for a period of time. Applications can be submitted by mail or in person at any Canada Immigration Centre, or at a Canadian Embassy, High Commission, or Consulate abroad. Permits are generally valid for 12 months. The application fee is $75 per permit.

A returning resident permit will make it easier for permanent residents to re-enter Canada after a long absence. You can obtain more information about the returning resident permit from an immigration lawyer or any Canada Immigration Centre.
