Ontario|Immigration LawFamily Class Immigrants 668 Sponsoring a family class member If you would like to sponsor a relative to immigrate to Canada in the family class category, you can obtain an information and application kit from any Canada Immigration Centre. The kit provides information about the documents that are needed and how to fill out the forms. Applications to be a sponsor can be submitted in person or by mail.
The application asks sponsors to show their income, debts, financial obligations, the number of immigrants they want to sponsor, and the number of immigrants they have previously sponsored. Sponsors must pay a non-refundable processing fee of $500 for every applicant aged 19 or older and $100 for every applicant under the age of 19.
Sponsors may also be asked to attend an interview at a Canada Immigration Centre. The sponsor must provide proof of their relationship to the immigrant. Within 4-6 weeks, sponsors should be notified with a decision about whether they qualify. If there is no response in 8 weeks, call the Citizenship and Immigration Call Centre to make sure that your package of documents has been received properly.
If the sponsor qualifies, the immigrant will then be contacted by a Canadian government office in their home country. The sponsor will be sent the necessary application forms and instructions to start the process. The Immigrant will need to verify the accuracy of the information that has been provided by the Sponsor and add any missing information, and then sign the forms. Immigrants will need to undergo a security check and a medical exam by a designated physician. They may also be asked to attend an interview.
You can obtain assistance with your sponsorship application from an immigration lawyer or from an Immigration Canada office.
