314 What can be the subject of a Copyright?

Copyright law makes it illegal to copy certain types of original works without the permission of the copyright owner. Copyright gives the owner of a work the sole right to produce, reproduce, perform, or publish the work or a substantial part of the work. To be covered by copyright, the creative works must be original, and must not have been copied from something else.

  • What does copyright apply to?
Copyright subsists in various types of dramatic, literary, artistic and musical works. More specifically, some of the works to which copyright applies include: books, plays, musical compositions, sculptures, paintings, films, tables, and even computer programs.

Only the expression of an idea is subject to copyright. The idea itself, information, and facts cannot themselves be protected by copyright.
