Ontario|Find A LawyerFind A Lawyer 858 How to find a Lawyer There are four general ways to find a lawyer. First, your co-workers, friends, and family may be able to recommend someone. Second, you can check the Legal Line Guide or website. Third, you can call the Law Society of Upper Canada's Lawyer Referral Service. Fourth, you can check the Yellow pages of your telephone book.
It is important to note that not all lawyers handle everything. Many lawyers restrict their practice to a particular area of law and do not handle other types of legal work. For example, most real estate lawyers would not handle divorces. Before you look for a lawyer you should determine what type of legal issue you have, so that you know what type of lawyer you will need.
- Word of mouth
The first way to find a lawyer is to ask your co-workers, friends, and family if they are happy with a particular lawyer. If the lawyer handles your type of legal issue, you may want to use this same lawyer to help you.
- Legal Line Access Guide or Website
Second, there are lawyers listed on the Legal Line Guide and website. All lawyers listed on Legal Line are in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada at the time of publication, and they practise in the area of law they are listed under. This is an easy way to find a local lawyer who practices in the area of law that you need.
- Lawyer Referral Service
Third, you can get the name of a local lawyer who practices the type of law you need from the Lawyer Referral Service operated by the Law Society of Upper Canada. For a small fee the Lawyer Referral Service will give you the name of a lawyer who will provide you with a 30 minute consultation free of charge. The phone number of the Lawyer Referral Service is available on the Legal Line Guide or in the Yellow pages of your telephone book.
- The Yellow Pages
Finally, you can find a lawyer in the Yellow pages of the telephone book. Many lawyers, including those that are referred through the Lawyer Referral Service, offer a free 30 minute consultation.
