563 What is a Certificate of Judgment?

If a judge orders someone to pay you money, and the debtor refuses to pay you, you can usually collect it through the court where the trial occurred. However, if the debtor does not live or carry on business in the same area as the Small Claims Court, you will need to collect the money in the area where the debtor lives. To do so, you will require a Certificate of Judgment.

A Certificate of Judgment is a document prepared by the creditor and brought or mailed to the court where the judgment was made in order to have the court seal put on it. With a Certificate of Judgment, you can transfer the judgment from one court to another.

If you are unsure about how to get a Certificate of Judgment, the staff at the Small Claims Court office may provide you with the form and printed information on how to complete it.
