    179 Child Tax Benefit

The Child Tax Benefit is a tax credit for families raising children under 18 years of age. It is a tax free monthly payment to the parent who is primarily responsible for caring for the children. However if you are married, both spouses must file a tax return each year in order to keep receiving the benefit.

The amount you are entitled to receive generally depends on the number of children you have, the age of your children, your family income, and whether or not you are married. For example, a family with 2 children under 18, will usually be eligible for an annual child tax benefit of about $1000. However, the amount you are eligible for decreases as your family income rises above $35,000.

To begin receiving the Child Tax Benefit, you must fill out forms available from Canada Revenue Agency. For additional information about the Child Tax Benefit you can contact Canada Revenue Agency. This number is listed in the Blue pages of your telephone book.
