Ontario|Tax LawBusiness Taxes 186 Registration with Canada Revenue Agency Most businesses are required to collect and remit federal taxes and will first need to register with Canada Revenue Agency in order to do so. Canada Revenue Agency now assigns each business just one Business Number in order to simplify correspondence with them.
- Applying for a Business Number
To apply for a Business Number you must fill out a form available from Canada Revenue Agency. Once you are assigned a Business Number, you can use it as a reference number for collecting and remitting GST, import or export taxes, payroll deductions, and corporate income tax.
- Other business taxes
There are other taxes and premiums that businesses pay that are administered by other government offices and do not use the Business Number assigned by Canada Revenue Agency. These include provincial sales tax, Workplace Safety & Insurance, and Employer Health Tax. For more information on these taxes, refer to other sections of Legal Line .
For additional information about registering with Canada Revenue Agency and obtaining a Business Number, you can call Canada Revenue Agency. The number is listed in the Blue pages of the telephone book.
