Ontario|Wills & EstatesWills 160 Living Wills A living will is a document or can form a part of a document that allows you to leave instructions about your future medical treatment. In particular, it lets you decide whether you want to be kept alive by medical machines if it is unlikely that you will recover. Even though it is called a will, it is not part of a regular will. Instead, it is usually written as part of a power of attorney for personal care. Although a living will is a legal document, if someone in your family has strong objections to your wishes for medical treatment to be discontinued, your wishes may not actually be carried out. A living will is not binding, but it can be very helpful to give direction to your family members.
If you would like to leave certain instructions for your health or medical care, you should consult with a lawyer about making a power of attorney for personal care.
