903 The University of Toronto - Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto is a national law school located on the downtown campus of Canada's largest university. It offers a JD degree instead of an LL.B. degree.

  • The JD Degree
JD stands for Juris Doctor. It is a law degree that is typically granted to students who receive a legal education after they've completed an undergraduate degree. On the other hand, the LL.B. is typically granted after completion of a legal education that is obtained following graduation from high school in virtually all Commonwealth jurisdictions. The JD degree designation is intended to bring the University of Toronto law school up to the growing international standards for second degree law programs.

  • Degree Programs
There are many degrees and combined degrees available in the JD program including: a full-time and half-time JD; a JD/M.B.A.; a JD/Ph.D in Philosophy, Economics or Political Science; and a JD/M.A. in Criminology.

  • Admission
A minimum of 15 university credits are required for admission to the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law. The application deadline is November 1st of each year. The LSAT is required, and multiple LSAT scores are averaged, except under special circumstances. The median Grade Point Average is 3.8 and the median LSAT score is 165. There is also an application fee.

  • Enrollment / Student Body / Faculty
There are usually over 1,800 applicants for first-year, while only about 170 students are enrolled. The total number of students for all 3 years is approximately 510. The faculty totals 135, made up of 55 full-time, 60 part-time, and 20 distinguished visitors.

  • Expenses and Financial Aid
Full-time tuition for the University of Toronto Faculty of Law is about $16,000 per year. Estimated additional expenses per year, including room and board, and books and supplies, are about $20,000. Extensive financial aid is available through scholarships, interest-free loans while at law school, and bursaries.

  • Activities & Services Available
Also available to students is the University of Toronto's Career Development Office, which is committed to preparing students who are seeking summer employment and articling positions and those looking for legal and law-related positions in Canada and elsewhere. The Office also facilitates the on-campus recruitment visits of Canadian and American law firms.
