    907 University of Ottawa - Faculty of Civil Law

    The University of Ottawa is the oldest and largest bilingual university in Canada. It is located in the nation's capital, within walking distance of Parliament, the National Library, National Archives, the Supreme Court, and other government offices and cultural centres.


  • Degree Programs
    The Faculty of Law offers both Common Law and Civil Law degrees preparing graduates for careers in Canada's two legal systems. The Common Law section offers a three-year program in both English and French. The Civil Law section offers a three-year program in French. These two areas are the foundations of the University of Ottawa's National Program.


  • National Program
    In the combined National Program, students may study common law or civil law and complement their training with a fourth year of study in the other system. This combined study program allows students to obtain two degrees, either an LL.L./LL.B. or an LL.B./LL.L. and dual legal training in either four years of full-time study or longer in part-time study. Common Law graduates may choose to complete an additional year of study in Civil Law. Civil Law graduates may complete a fourth year in Common Law.


  • Admission
    A minimum of two years of university studies is required for admission to the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. The LSAT is required and the highest LSAT score is used. Though academic performance and LSAT scores are significant factors, consideration for admission to the Civil Law section can also be given to an applicant's achievements in extracurricular activities, community work, and outstanding achievements in previous careers.

    The application deadline is November 1st of each year. There is also an application fee.


  • Enrollment / Student Body / Faculty
    There are approximately 2,700 applicants for first-year. About 150 are enrolled in the first-year English program, and 50 in the French program. The total number of students full-time is approximately 710. The faculty consists of 43 full-time members and 90 part-time.



  • Expenses and Financial Aid
    Full-time tuition for the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law is approximately $10,000 per year. Estimated additional expenses per year, including room and board, and books and supplies, ranges from about $9,000 - $12,000. Scholarships as well as performance and need-based bursaries are available.


  • Activities & Services Available
    Activities and services available at the faculty include the Education Equity Program, publication of the Ottawa Law Review, the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic, and the Common Law Student Society.
