Legal Line® is a federal not for profit organization established in 1994. Through the Legal Line® telephone, fax-on-demand and internet systems, free legal information is made available for every home and business in Canada. Legal Line® covers 1,000 topics within 35 areas of law.

The same legal information found on LegalLine.ca® is now available in the 600 page Legal Line® reference book entitled, Your Guide to Canadian Law.

Through the efforts of over 300 volunteer lawyers, Legal Line® remains the premier public resource for legal information. The Canadian legal community has given generously of its time and knowledge, making these services unparalleled anywhere in the world.

As a valuable public service, Legal Line® also includes information about government and agency offices and related services. After obtaining legal information, individuals and businesses can then access the professional assistance they require.

During the last decade, there have been tremendous changes to the demands placed on public services and the government. The public requires more legal information and assistance while budgetary cuts have substantially reduced the quantity and quality of programs available.

With an increase of legal topics and the expansion to national coverage, Legal Line® continues to bridge the information gap. All Canadians now have direct access to the laws under which they are governed.

To provide Canadians with easy to understand legal information through Legal Line®, a 24 hour touch tone telephone service and through LegalLine.ca, a comprehensive internet website; and

To provide Canadians with sufficient legal information to make informed decisions and to know when the assistance of a lawyer is advisable, and to direct them to appropriate resources for further assistance.

1000 Topics / 35 Areas of Law
1000 legal issues are covered in a simple question/answer and problem/solution format. The bite-sized topics allow individuals to quickly zero in on the answers they need. All information will be maintained accurate and up-to-date by over 300 volunteer reviewing lawyers, who are experts or certified specialists in each particular area of law.

Capacity to Handle High Call Volumes
The Legal Line® telephone service is a free pre-recorded service available 24 hrs a day for those individuals who prefer to 'listen' to the legal information. Legal Line® uses a customized AudioText system capable of handling unlimited call volumes. The system is adjusted as necessary to ensure at least a 98% first call success rate. Legal Line® currently receives over 1,200 callers per day.

Instant Access to All Topics
The telephone system has been designed to allow callers instant access to all topics and sub-topics during the same call. Callers can skip from topic to topic or repeat a topic at will, without having to listen to a topic in its entirety.

1.4 Million Free Guides
The Guide is a directory of all legal topics that is to be used by individuals when calling the Legal Line® telephone service. With the assistance of 2,600 participating Provincial and Federal Offices, and Community Organizations, Legal Line® Guides are readily available to the Ontario Public.

The Guides unfold like a map to a size of 36” x 22”. One side of the Guide contains a complete list of all legal topics (under the relevant area of law) and the topic extension numbers. The other side of the Guide features Government and Agency telephone numbers and websites.

This site is based on a text format of the same information available on the Legal Line® telephone system. The user can select the province and area of law. The consistent navigation bar allows easy access from topic to topic. This site also includes a comprehensive list of resources, links to relevant government and agency sites, and a keyword search feature for legal topics.
