Ontario|Immigration LawSkilled Worker Class Immigrants 675 The Point System & independent immigrants The system that is used to decide whether an independent immigrant qualifies to come to Canada is called the Point System. For the different sub-categories of independent immigrants, there are different minimum point requirements. Most independent immigrants must have 70 points to qualify to immigrate. Independent immigrants who apply as assisted relatives must have 65 points.
Points are awarded for your level of education, occupational training, amount of work experience, occupation, age, and knowledge of French or English. Points are also awarded for having a relative in Canada or for having arranged employment. Additional points are based on government immigration targets, which are adjusted annually. Points are also awarded based on the visa officer's assessment of your ability to successfully settle in Canada. Even if you have the required total number of points, your application may be refused if there have been no points awarded for your occupation or work experience.
Most applicants who have the required number of points can enter Canada as independent immigrants after they pass a medical exam and a security check. If you do not have the minimum number of points for the category you apply in, your immigration application will be rejected. If your application is rejected, you can re-apply after you have taken appropriate steps to earn more points.
