How much does process serving cost?

Region: Ontario Answer # 3020

The costs of process serving depend on a number of factors and are set by the process server or process serving agency.

The city where the process of service is done, the type of service requested, and the number of attempts made to serve are all factors that will determine how much you have to pay.

Costs may include for:

  • Rush service
  • Same day
  • Routine service
  • Attempted service
  • Serving to additional parties
  • Court filing and searches
  • Skip tracing

Additional fees may also apply for:

  • Filing court documents,
  • Affidavits,
  • Photocopying,
  • Postage,
  • Mileage and parking, and
  • other administrative services

Depending on where you live in Canada, the cost of a routine process service can range from $60 to $100 (for up-to 2 attempts).  Rush service could cost an additional $25 – $80.

Court fillings and searches can range from $45 to $125, again depending on location, while skip tracing services (used to locate people) are usually charged by the hour.

Some process services may charge a retainer (a fee due up-front which is then deducted from your final costs).

It is important to ask a process server what their fees for specific services are before you hire them.
