How to order medical marijuana
Region: Ontario Answer # 2484Under the Cannabis Act, if you have a medical marijuana document, you are authorized to obtain cannabis for medical purposes. You have three ways to do so:
- Purchase it online from a Health Canada authorized seller. Retail stores are not authorized to sell cannabis for medical purposes.
- Grow your own by registering with Health Canada to produce a limited amount of cannabis for your own medical purposes.
- Designate someone to produce it for you.
Purchasing medical marijuana from a licensed seller
You must register with a licensed seller before you can purchase cannabis products for your own medical use. Products include:
- fresh marijuana
- dried marijuana
- cannabis oil
There are a number of steps you must follow.
- Obtain a medical document from your health care practitioner
For more information, refer to How to obtain a medical marijuana document (prescription).
- Submit the medical document to a licensed seller
After receiving your medical document from your healthcare practitioner, submit it to a licensed seller. You can choose which one you wish to use from Health Canada’s list of Authorized licensed cultivators, processors and sellers under the Cannabis Act. Some healthcare practitioners may submit the document for you.
- Licensed seller will contact you
The licensed seller will open a file for you and will contact you (by phone or email) to provide further information on their registration process.
- Complete Registration Application
You must complete and submit a Registration Application found on the licensed sellers website (or have one sent to you) in order to obtain your Registration Document. The Registration Document is your proof of official registration as a medical cannabis patient.
Although each seller has it’s own Registration Application, they all ask for the same basic information, including your
- full name,
- date of birth,
- phone number,
- home and delivery address,
- caregiver’s information (if applicable), and
- health care practitioner’s name and office address
You will also be asked to certify information, such as:
- you are a resident of Canada,
- the information you give is correct and complete,
- the medical document submitted is an original,
- you will use the product for your own purposes, and
- you understand the risks associated with medical marijuana.
With some sellers, you can submit the medical document and Registration Application at the same time.
- Receive Registration Document and order your product
Once your registration is approved, the seller will send you a package with your registration document and information you need to place your order from their website. You will usually also receive a wallet-sized card containing the same information as your Registration Document.
The Registration Document is effective the day it is issued, rather than the day the medical document was signed by the health care practitioner.
Can you change licensed sellers?
You can change your medical cannabis provider at anytime by doing the following:
- Cancel the registration with your current provider,
- Request that your medical document be returned to you or transferred to your new provider (or your new provider can request the transfer)
- Complete the registration process to receive a new Registration Document (each licensed seller has it’s own registration application that must be completed and submitted)
For more information, visit the Health Canada website, or contact a licensed provider. If you wish to produce cannabis yourself for your own medical purposes, or designate someone else to produce it for you, refer to Can you grow your own medical marijuana?
