How much medical marijuana can you legally possess?
Region: Ontario Answer # 2483How much medical cannabis can you possess at home?
Although provincial and territorial cannabis laws set the limits for the possession of recreational cannabis at home under the Cannabis Act, there is no limit to the amount of medical cannabis you can store at home.
How much medical cannabis can you possess in public?
Under Section 8 of the Cannabis Act, individuals 18 and older can legally possess up-to 30 grams of dried cannabis or it’s equivalent to be used for non-medical purposes in public, regardless of whether the cannabis is personally grown or obtained from a federal licensed seller.
However, you can possess more than the 30-gram legal amount of cannabis in public if it is to be used for medical purposes and you register and are approved to do so with Health Canada.
Registration to possess medical cannabis in public above the legal limit
You can register to possess up-to an additional 30-day supply of dried cannabis, or its equivalent, up-to a maximum of 150 grams (depending on the amount authorized by your health care practitioner) in addition to the 30 grams allowed for possession of recreational cannabis, if you:
- live in Canada,
- are authorized to use cannabis for medical purposes,
- intend to purchase your cannabis from an authorized seller, and
- are not registered with a federally licensed seller or with Health Canada to produce medical cannabis yourself or have designated someone to produce it for you
To register for possession above the limit in public, you must:
- Obtain a medical document
Meet with your health care practitioner. If your health care practitioner agrees that you have symptoms or a condition that could benefit from the use of cannabis, they will issue you a medical document.
- Register with Health Canada
Submit the following by mail to Health Canada:
- the original medical document provided by your health care practitioner, and
- a completed Registration Application Form for Possession Only
- Receive a Registration Certificate
If your registration package is complete and you meet all of the requirements, Health Canada will approve your registration and send you a Registration Certificate. This Certificate permits you to legally possess, for medical purposes, up-to a 30-day supply of dried cannabis, or its equivalent, up-to a maximum of 150 grams, in pubic, in addition to the recreational limit. It must be shown if requested by law enforcement.
Refer to Health Canada for complete registration instructions and forms.
