Answer # 2467
What government department is responsible for overseeing the cultivation and distribution of cannabis?
Region: Ontario Answer # 2467Health Canada is a department of the federal government responsible for
- maintaining and improving the health of Canadians;
- ensuring that high-quality services are accessible; and
- reducing health risks.
Anyone wishing to cultivate, process and sell cannabis must hold a federal licence issued by Health Canada.
Health Canada is responsible for licensing commercial cannabis growers and overseeing the distribution of cannabis to suppliers. Licensed producers (LPs) of cannabis can grow and package both medicinal and recreational cannabis for sale to the public, however, they do not sell directly to the public.
Licence holders are authorized to sell to:
- wholesalers/distributors supplying the provincial and territorial cannabis retailers, and/or
- individuals who have registered to obtain cannabis products for medical purposes (“registered patients”).
