What are the penalties for a traffic ticket?

Region: Ontario Answer # 2641

The penalties for traffic offences can include fines, demerit points, licence suspension, and imprisonment. The specific penalty, such as how much is the fine and how many demerit points you will get depends on the specific offence.

Ontario speeding fines and demerit points

In Ontario, speeding offences carry increasingly serious consequences based on how far over the posted limit a driver is travelling. As the speed increases, so do the penalties, which may include higher fines, demerit points, and possible licence suspensions.

Demerit Points

Certain traffic offences carry demerit points, which are recorded by the Ministry of Transportation. Demerit points are separate from the fine.

Accumulating too many demerit points may result in:

  • Warning letters
  • Interviews
  • Licence suspension
  • Insurance premiums may increase
