How is your age verified by online casinos?

Region: Ontario Answer # 5629

Age verification ensures that only people over the legal age participate in online gambling. Before you can gamble online, your identity and age must be verified.

When entering an online casino, along with creating a username and password, you will normally be required to provide your name, address, and date of birth which will be verified against various databases (e.g. a voting registry). You may be required to provide proof of your age and identity for further verification:

  • government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s licence or passport; and
  • other documentation, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement

This documentation is always required when playing a game where you can win actual money, called a “real money” game, and you are withdrawing winnings for the first time.

Although every site is different, it can take up to 24 hours for your information to be verified.

Confirm your physical location:

Online gambling websites are also required to confirm that a person is playing from a jurisdiction where gambling is licensed.

To determine where players are physically located, online casinos will ask for your address and will likely also use geolocation technology to verify your location. Geolocation software includes a number of technologies, such as cellular positioning, GPS and Wi-Fi location tracking.

Online casinos registered in Ontario are required to use geolocation software. Geolocation has also been proven helpful in forestalling identity theft and in the early detection of fraud.
