Security Guard and Private Investigator Basic Training

Region: Ontario Answer # 1023

Before applying for a licence, all new security guards and private investigators must successfully complete a basic training course, pass the required exam, and pay the associated fees.

There are separate training courses for security guards and private investigators, and only ministry-compliant training providers, such as Training Centre Canada, are authorized to offer them. Recent regulatory changes require training providers to also be licensed agencies for the courses they deliver. For example, to provide security guard training, the provider must hold a valid security guard agency licence, and the same applies to private investigator training. all of which meet licensing and insurance requirements.

If you wish to apply for a dual licence to work in both roles, you must complete both courses and pass the corresponding tests.

Where to Take a Basic Training Course

Basic training courses may be available through:

  • Community colleges
  • Career colleges
  • Public universities
  • Licensed agencies that provide security guard and private investigator training, such as Smith Security.
  • Registered employers offering in-house training for their security staff (these programs are limited to internal employees)

Training providers must meet licensing and insurance requirements set by the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005. Refer to the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General (MSG) for a list of approved training providers.

It’s important to note that the Ministry does not endorse or recommend any specific training provider. Prospective students should research their options carefully to ensure they choose a reputable training program. Not all training courses are created equal and selecting an engaging and well-structured program will help ensure knowledge retention and a strong understanding of the industry.

Course Length

Security Guard Basic Training

Security guard training programs must be at least 40 hours long. This includes:

  • 32 hours of security guard instruction
  • 8 hours of emergency first aid and CPR certification

Private Investigator Basic Training

Private investigator training courses must be at least 50 hours long. Emergency first aid and CPR certification is not required for private investigator licensing.

Dual Licence Training

For those seeking a combined security guard and private investigator licence, the training must be at least 90 hours long, which includes first aid and CPR certification.

CPR/First Aid Opt-Out Option

If you already have a valid first aid/CPR certificate from a St. John Ambulance or Workplace Safety Insurance Board-certified instructor, you may be able to opt out of the first aid portion of the training.

It is important to ensure that your CPR certification is from an approved provider; otherwise, it will not be recognized.

Methods of Instruction

Basic security and private investigator training can be completed through:

  • In-class instruction
  • Online training

Online training must include real-time instructor interaction, and web-based courses have become the preferred option due to their flexibility and affordability. Completing training online ensures full compliance with required course hours, as training platforms track completion time.

Course Content

The goal of basic training is to equip security guards and private investigators with the skills and knowledge needed to perform their roles effectively, legally, and professionally.

Each course must meet the minimum 40-hour or 50-hour requirement, and training providers must prove that their curriculum is comprehensive enough to fulfill ministry standards. Visit the MSG website for more specific information on course content.

Training Completion Number (TCN)

Upon successfully completing a basic training course, you will receive a Training Completion Number (TCN) from your authorized training provider.

Training Certificate

Upon completion of training, providers must issue a training certificate that includes:

  • Student’s full name
  • Training provider’s name
  • Type of training completed (security guard, private investigator, or both)
  • Date of completion
  • Signature of the training provider representative
