Do you need to declare your winnings when you return to Canada?
Region: Ontario Answer # 5651There is no legal limit on how much money you can bring back into to Canada that you have won through gaming. However, if you return to Canada with currency and/or monetary instruments in excess of $10,000 Canadian dollars, it must be reported to Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
The $10,000 can be any combination of foreign currency and monetary instruments. Monetary instruments include:
- stocks,
- bonds,
- bank drafts,
- cheques, and
- traveller’s cheques.
When entering Canada, you must declare it at:
- an airport kiosk
- on your CBSA Declaration Card (if one was provided to you)
- through your Advance Declaration
- as part of your verbal declaration to a border services officer
If you do not report the amount in excess of $10,000, the Government of Canada can seize the money and not return it.
Visit Canada Border and Services Agency (CBSA) for more information.
