How much money can you bring into the United States?

Region: Ontario Answer # 5650

There is no legal limit on how much money a Canadian can take into the United States to gamble. However, if you are carrying more than $10,000 Canadian dollars, it must be reported to both the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) when leaving Canada and to US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) when entering the U.S. This requirement applies whether you are travelling for business or pleasure.

Leaving Canada with more than $10,000 Canadian dollars – declare with CBSA

If you are traveling with more than $10,000 Canadian in currency or monetary instruments, you must declare it to CBSA when leaving Canada. If travelling by air, report to the CBSA office within the airport before clearing security.

If traveling by land, boat or rail, report to the CBSA office nearest your location.

The $10,000 can be any combination of foreign currency and monetary instruments. Monetary instruments include:

  • stocks,
  • bonds,
  • bank drafts,
  • cheques, and
  • traveller’s cheques.

Visit Canada Border and Services Agency (CBSA) for more information.

Entering the U.S. with more than $10,000 USD – declare with CBP

  • Customs Declaration Form (CBP Form 6059B)
  • Report of International Transportation of Currency and Monetary Instruments (FinCEN Form 105)

Visit U.S. Customs and Border Protection for more information.

What if you fail to declare traveling with over $10,000?

Failing to report to CBSA that you are traveling with more than $10,000 can result in penalties from both CBSA and CBP that may include:

  • Confiscation of all currency or monetary instruments
  • Fines
  • Up to 10 years of imprisonment (in the case of fraudulent reporting to CBP)
