What is a “professional” gambler?
Region: Ontario Answer # 5606Generally speaking, the term “professional” gambler refers to an individual who realistically expects to profit from their gambling activities, and the gambling activities constitute a source of income.
Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) considers several factors when deciding if someone is a professional gambler, thereby making their gambling activities a business, and their profits taxable.
Some factors include, if the person:
- gambles frequently, regularly or on a full-time basis,
- expects to make a living by gambling, rather than gambling only for pleasure,
- has highly organized gambling activities,
- has special knowledge or inside information that enables them to reduce the element of chance,
- travels to play in tournaments,
- attends conferences for professional gamblers,
- practices and/or takes courses/lessons to improve their gambling skills, etc.
How much tax do professional gamblers pay?
