Region: Ontario Answer # 5670

Horse racing is an activity involving two or more horses ridden by jockeys over a set distance or course to identity which of the horses is fastest. In some cases, the horses are driven without riders.

The most common type of horse racing competition in Canada is what is known as a flat race.

In a flat race, Thoroughbred horses gallop directly between two points around a straight or oval track. A flat race does not include obstacles.  A Thoroughbred is a horse breed developed for horse racing known for their agility and speed.

There are three major horse races in Canada:

  • Queen’s Plate,
  • Prince of Wales Stakes and
  • Breeder’s Stakes

Harness racing is a form of horse racing in which the horses race at a trot or pace while pulling a driver in a sulky, which is a two-wheeled cart occupied by a driver. Harness racing is done by Standardbred horses that are bred and trained to trot or pace.
