What is sports or event betting?

Betting on sports is legal in Canada. A bet is an amount of money at risk in a wager.

Event or sports betting refers to betting on events related to sports, matches, competitions, and other types of activities as determined by the provincial gaming authority or regulatory body.

Both parlay betting and single-event betting are legal. In parlay betting, a bettor makes two or more bets and combines them into one wager.

Licensing and regulations

Companies that want to offer sport and event betting must be registered with the provincial regulator. Depending on the event, the operator and/or website must be conducted and managed by provincial authorities.

For example, in Ontario, companies that want to offer sport and event betting must be registered with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and be conducted and managed by either iGaming Ontario (iGO) or the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) Visit the AGCO website for more information.

Businesses that offer sport and event bets must meet the requirements and standards set out in provincial gaming regulations, which may include:

  • Requiring operators to actively monitor the betting markets for suspicious betting activity.
  • Prohibiting insiders, including coaches, athletes and referees, from betting on certain events.

What is the legal age to bet in Canada?

In Alberta, Manitoba, and Quebec, anyone over the age of 18 can bet on sports, in all other provinces and territories the legal age is 19.
