Where and how do you bet on sports or events?

Region: Ontario Answer # 5660

In Canada, legal sports and event betting is operated by each province’s government regulated gambling body. Betting is done through “sportsbooks.” A sportsbook is another term for a bookmaker. A sportsbook accepts bets from individual sports bettors.

Depending on where you live, you can bet online or in-person at a retail kiosk. Online betting is available in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Quebec, and the Atlantic Provinces.

Some provinces do not have their own online gambling site but instead partner with other government’s organizations, such PlayNow.com in British Columbia and Manitoba, and PlayAlberta.ca in Alberta.

Private sportsbooks in Ontario

Ontario’s online or in-person government run betting site is Proline. However, Ontario also offers betting through privately regulated sportsbooks that operate out of the province. These private sportsbooks operate sites that must follow the regulations and laws set out by the Ontario government.
