Answer # 8005
AI in healthcare
Region: Ontario Answer # 8005The potential benefits of AIs in the healthcare sector are vast. AI tools could potentially be used to improve patient outcomes and optimize resource allocation. For instance, AI can be used to analyze complex medical data and thereby assist medical professionals in diagnosing and treating patients. AI could also be used for managing hospital logistics. However, as already mentioned, the use of AI raises questions about the ethical use of data and informed consent. AI, given these issues, likely needs to include an element of human oversight, especially when it comes to healthcare which involves life-critical systems.
These issues have been dealt with in certain provinces. In Ontario, the Personal Health Information Protection Act (“PHIPA”) provides strict privacy safeguards, while British Columbia’s Personal Information Protection Act (“PIPA”) offers similar protections, emphasizing the confidentiality and security of personal health data. These laws ensure patients can trust their sensitive information is being properly managed and that any use of AI in the healthcare sector is managed via checks and balances and security measures.
