CRA tax collection agencies

Region: Ontario Answer # 3756

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) employes its own staff to manage tax-related issues, but also partners with private collection agencies for tax recovery.

 CRA employees

  • Official employees of the CRA
  • Assist with tax returns, audits, collections, inquiries, etc.
  • CRA employees contact taxpayers though official communication methods like mail or phone
  • They have a CRA identification number and will use it to identify themselves

 CRA collections

  • Not employees of the CRA but authorized to work for them in a limited capacity
  • The CRA may collect unpaid taxes through private collection agencies
  • These collection agencies will clearly identify themselves
  • Payments are always made to the Receiver General for Canada and NOT the collection Agency
