How does the CRA Audit process work?

The CRA audit process generally works like this:

  1. Notification: The CRA will notify you that you (or your business) is being auditied.
  2. Document Review: The CRA will requests your tax records (books, records, receipts, and other supporting documents).
  3. Analysis: The auditor will review your documents and assess accuracy, compliance determine if there are any discrepancies.
  4. Findings: The CRA will notify you of the results of the audit, which may include reassessment, additional taxes owed, penalties, criminal investigation, or refunds.
  5. Resolution: You choose to either accept the audit results or dispute them through the CRA appeals process.
