Answer # 3741
What to do if you you receive a Notice of Review letter
Region: Ontario Answer # 3741A review is not an audit. Do not panic. The CRA conducts about 3 million reviews each year.
In a review, income amounts, deductions, and credits are all reviewed for one specific year to be sure they are reported correctly. CRA will likely ask for more information and request supporting documentation.
When you receive the notice, do not ignore it as there is a time limit to respond (usually 30 days). Read the notice carefully and make sure you understand what the CRA is asking you. If you have the documents handy, or can easily answer their questions, then do so. CRA will tell you where and how to submit your documents. If you find the issues are complicated or the amounts in question are significant, you may wish to hire an accountant or lawyer to assist you.
Do not submit extra documents or answer questions that have not been asked. This confuses the issue and may lead to further complications.
How will I get the results of CRA’s review?
Once the review is completed, the CRA will send you the results in writing by letter, assessment or reassessment.
