Federal Skilled Trades Program
Region: Ontario Answer # 6642The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for people who want to become permanent residents based on being qualified in a skilled trade, such as:
- construction
- transportation
- manufacturing and industrial
- natural resources and agriculture
To apply, applicants must:
- Plan to live outside the province of Quebec (the province of Quebec chooses its own skilled workers),
- Meet the required levels in English or French for each language ability (speaking, reading, writing, and listening),
- Have at least two years of full-time work experience (or an equal amount of part-time work experience) in a skilled trade within the five years before applying,
- Meet all job requirements for that skilled trade as set out in the NOC,
- Have an offer of full-time employment for a total period of at least one year or a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a provincial or territorial body, and
- Have proof that they have enough money for themselves and their family to settle in Canada.
There is no education requirement for the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
In Canada, only the provinces and territories can issue certificates of qualification in the skilled trades. Therefore, applicants must confirm what is required in the relevant province or territory.

Fees
Applicants must pay a processing fee for themselves and any family members. The processing fee depends on how many people are included in the application. The processing fee is non-refundable, even if the application is rejected. There are additional fees that applicants are responsible for, depending on the program.
