How to apply for a CUSMA work permit

Applying for a CUSMA work permit involves meeting several requirements and providing a number of documents.

Port of Entry Applications

U.S. Citizens:

  • Can apply for CUSMA work permits directly at Canadian ports of entry (land borders or airports)
  • Do NOT require Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)
  • Do NOT require electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) as of April 26, 2022
  • Must carry valid U.S. passport
  • Processing typically same-day at port of entry
  • Can apply for Business Visitor status, Professional, or Intra-Company Transferee categories at POE

Mexican Citizens:

  • Generally require Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) before traveling to Canada
  • Exceptions – Can apply at port of entry if ALL three criteria met:
    1. Entering Canada by air OR flying through Canada to another destination
    2. Coming from U.S. with valid U.S. non-immigrant visa
    3. Purpose is CUSMA work permit category
  • Otherwise must apply at visa office prior to travel
  • Must carry valid Mexican passport

Visa Office Applications

Traders and Investors should be encouraged to submit work permit applications to an IRCC office prior to arrival in Canada due to complexity of applications.

All applicants can choose to apply online or at a visa office before traveling to reduce risk of refusal at the border.

Required Documentation

All applications require:

  • Valid passport (validity must exceed requested work permit duration)
  • Proof of citizenship
  • Offer of employment letter (for Professionals, ICT, Traders, Investors)
  • Educational credentials/professional licenses (for Professionals)
  • Employer compliance fee payment confirmation ($230 CAD)
  • Supporting documentation specific to category
  • Proof of temporary intent
