Does Canadian income of British partner in Canada meet Unmarried Partner Visa financial requirement?

Region: Ontario Answer # 6117

Yes, in certain circumstances. The financial requirement for the Unmarried Partner Visa — currently £29,000 gross annual income — can be met using income earned by a British sponsor based in Canada, provided they are returning to the UK and have a confirmed job offer in place.

Specifically, if your British partner is employed in Canada and intends to return to the UK, income from a UK employment offer can be used, provided the employment begins within three months of the visa being granted. The job offer must be in writing and include a signed employment contract or written confirmation from the employer.

Canadian employment income from an employer with no UK connection will not, on its own, satisfy the threshold. Cash savings can fill that gap, however — whether used alone or to top up qualifying income — as long as the required £88,500 has been sitting in a qualifying account for at least six months prior to applying.

All income declared in Canadian dollars will be converted to GBP using OANDA exchange rates applicable on the date of application. The financial threshold is subject to change without notice.
