Can my income as the applicant count toward the UK Spouse Visa financial requirement?

Region: Ontario Answer # 6112

Generally, only your UK sponsor’s income counts toward the £29,000 gross income requirement. Your income as an applicant living in Canada typically does not qualify for the Spouse Visa income threshold.

Exceptions where the applicant’s income may count

There are exceptions where the applicant’s income may count:

  • Already working legally in the UK If you’re currently in the UK on a valid work visa (such as a Skilled Worker Visa, Graduate visa, or other employment-related visa), your UK earnings can be included in the financial calculation.
  • Valid UK job offer: If you have a job offer in the UK that starts within 3 months of your intended arrival in the UK, you may use that income to meet the £29,000 requirement. The job offer must be in writing and include a signed employment contract.

Special circumstances for sponsors working in Canada

If your British spouse is employed in Canada but plans to return to the UK, their Canadian income may qualify provided that:

  • They have a confirmed UK job offer awaiting their return.
  • The UK employment begins within 3 months of the visa being granted.
  • The returning UK position meets the £29,000 gross annual income threshold.

All GBP (Great British Pound) amounts can be converted to Canadian dollars using the official OANDA exchange rates that were applicable on the date you submit your application.
