What is the Schengen Area of Europe?

The Schengen Area, also known as the Schengen Zone or Schengen Territories, are 29 countries in Europe that Canadian citizens are not required to have a visa to enter for stays up-to 90 days (known as “short stays”) in any 180-day period.

Schengen Area Countries

The Schengen Area is made up of the following 29 European Union countries:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Croatia
  • Czech Republic
  • Cyprus
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

Cyprus and Ireland

Cyprus and Ireland belong to the European Union but not to the Schengen Area and Canadian citizens do not need a visa for a short stay in these countries, only a valid passport.
