Do Canadians need a visa to work or study in Europe?

Region: Ontario Answer # 6211

Yes, Canadian travellers who plan to stay in the Schengen Area of Europe are required to apply for a visa from an embassy or consulate, if

  • they plan to stay for longer than 90 consecutive days, or
  • they are travelling for purposes other than those permitted with ETIAS, such as to work or study, or for long-term residence

Long-Stay Type D Visa / National Visa application

Applicants are required to submit an application for a Long-Stay Visa (Type D) – also called a National visa – to the embassy or consulate of the destination country, usually up-to 3 months before travel. This is a class of long-term visa issued by Schengen countries to foreign nationals.

While the application must usually be submitted in person, there may be instances where it can be done online. Check with the embassy or consulate of the country you wish to visit. Applications must be approved before travel.

The Type D Visa/National Visa allows non-EU/EEA residents to stay, work, or study in a specific Schengen country for longer than 90 days and usually up-to one year but sometimes longer. Applicants must provide a number of documents such as an admission letter showing enrolment as a student, or letter of employment or work permit from destination country. Applicants must also pay any required fees.

Specific Type D  / National Visas

Different countries have different types of long-stay visas, depending on the reason for the visit. For example,

France

  • VLS-TS: a long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit, allowing a stay of 4–12 months.
  • Talent Passport: For highly skilled workers, researchers, or artists.
  • Student Visa: For studies lasting longer than three months.

Italy

  • National Study Visa
  • National Visa for family reasons
  • National Visa for Elective Residency

Applying for residency

Some long-stay visa holders may need to register or apply for a formal residence permit within a specified timeframe after arriving in the destination country.
