Does having a UK-born grandparent allow me to live and work in the UK?

Region: Ontario Answer # 6151

Yes, provided you meet the eligibility criteria. The UK Ancestry Visa allows Commonwealth citizens — including Canadians — who have a grandparent born in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or Ireland before 31 March 1922 to live and work in the UK for up to five years. You must be aged 17 or over and be able to demonstrate a genuine intention to seek and take employment in the UK.

The Ancestry Visa gives you the right to work for any employer, in any role — including self-employment. It is one of the most flexible immigration routes available to Canadians. It does not require a job offer before you apply, though you must demonstrate a realistic intention and ability to find work.

Does it lead to permanent residence?

Yes. After five continuous years in the UK on an Ancestry Visa, you may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — commonly referred to as permanent residence. To qualify, you must have been continuously employed or self-employed throughout that period, have met the residence requirements, and pass the Life in the UK test. Once you have secured ILR, you may apply for British naturalization after a further 12 months’ residence in the UK.

The visa can be extended in five-year increments if you do not yet meet the ILR requirements, and your spouse or partner and dependent children can apply to accompany you as dependants.
