How can Canadians with British ancestry apply for a UK Ancestry Visa?
Region: Ontario Answer # 6105The UK Ancestry Visa enables Canadian citizens to live and work in the UK through their ancestral ties to the UK. To be eligible, you must be aged 17 or older, have a grandparent who was born in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or before 31 March 1922 in what is now Ireland, and plan to work in the UK.
Providing the correct evidence is essential. You will need to provide your own full, long-form birth certificate showing parentage. You will also need to provide the relevant parents’ and grandparents’ full birth certificates to prove your British ancestry.
Proof of sufficient funds
You must demonstrate that you can maintain and accommodate yourself (and any dependants) in the UK without recourse to public funds.
The Immigration Rules do not prescribe a fixed minimum savings amount for the UK Ancestry Visa. Instead, caseworkers assess whether you would be able to support yourself on arrival without relying on state benefits. In practice, this is often considered with reference to UK Income Support levels. You must provide recent bank statements showing accessible funds. The funds must be genuinely available at the date of application.
If you are applying with dependants, you must demonstrate sufficient funds to support the entire family unit. The expected level of funds will depend on your circumstances, including accommodation arrangements and your plans to seek employment in the UK.
Canadian bank statements from major institutions (RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC, etc.) are readily accepted. Funds in Canadian dollars will be converted to the equivalent amount in GBP (Great British Pound) by the UK visa officer to ensure that you have sufficient funds as per income support thresholds.
Intention to work in the UK
Applicants must demonstrate an intention and ability to work in the UK — for example, through job offers, business plans if self-employed, or other documentation showing real employment plans. You should provide evidence demonstrating that you have been gainfully employed or self-employed in Canada in support of your application.
Visa duration
An Ancestry Visa is valid for five years, at the end of which you may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) provided you meet the residence and employment requirements. It also allows dependants (spouse/partner and children) to accompany you if they meet the relevant criteria.
You cannot switch into an Ancestry Visa from within the UK; you must apply from outside the UK.
