Answer # 6202
Can a Canadian stay in Europe for more than 90 days?
Region: Ontario Answer # 6202Some countries allow Canadians to extend their stay beyond the 90-day limit in Schengen Area countries under specific conditions:
- a bilateral agreement was concluded between Canada and the European country you wish to stay in beyond 90 days;
- you request this extension either when you enter that country or during your stay in that country, at the latest on the last working day of your 90-day stay in any 180-day period.
However, if you want to stay longer than 90 days in a country that doesn’t allow extensions of stay, you must apply for the appropriate visa before you travel, such as a long-stay visa or residency permit from the specific country.
Countries outside the Schengen Area may allow you to reset your days or stay longer. Ultimately, it is the Passport Control officer (Border officer) that make the final decision on whether you may enter or remain in a country.
What if you stay longer than 90 days without permission?
if you exceed 90 days and are not given an extension, you must leave until enough time has passed for you to re-enter or apply for a visa. One option is to travel to a non-Schengen country once your 90 days are up. You can re-enter the Schengen Area once you have accumulated enough time outside.
Overstaying the 90-day limit within a 180-day period in the Schengen Area can lead to serious consequences, including
- heavy fines
- immediate deportation, and
- potential travel bans of up to 5 years.
If you do overstay, it is recorded in the Entry/Exit EES system. This can lead to visa denials and increased scrutiny at border crossings in the future.
