Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
Region: Ontario Answer # 7828Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (section 88) is a possession offence that appears in Part III of the Criminal Code. It extends beyond firearms to include any weapon possessed with an intent that threatens public peace.
Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- 88 (1) Every person commits an offence who carries or possesses a weapon, an imitation of a weapon, a prohibited device or any ammunition or prohibited ammunition for a purpose dangerous to the public peace or for the purpose of committing an offence.
Punishment
(2) Every person who commits an offence under subsection (1)
- (a)is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years; or
- (b)is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

- Carrying concealed weapon
- Carrying weapon while attending public meeting
- Possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
- Possession of prohibited weapon, device or ammunition knowing its possession is unauthorized
- Unauthorized possession of firearm
- Possession at unauthorized place
- Unauthorized possession in motor vehicle
