The Law Clerk program at Algonquin College is a two-year (4 semesters) Ontario College Diploma program. Graduates are prepared for career opportunities with law offices and other legal services providers, as well as the legal departments of Federal, Provincial and Municipal Government offices, insurance institutions, real estate offices, and other businesses.

Students learn various skills, including:

  • interviewing clients
  • performing general office procedures
  • working with legal software to compile information and prepare documents
  • compiling evidence and documentation
  • maintaining corporate documents and filings
  • entering data in legal forms and drafting routine correspondence
    preparing briefs

Areas of law studied include:

  • family,
  • estates,
  • civil litigation,
  • corporate,
  • administrative law, and
  • real estate law practices

Admission requirements

College eligibility

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent; OR
  • Academic and Career Entrance (ACE) certificate; OR
  • General Educational Development (GED) certificate; OR
  • Mature Student status (19 years of age or older and without a high school diploma at the start of the program).

Program eligibility

  • English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or equivalent).
  • Applicants with international transcripts must provide proof of the subject specific requirements noted above and may be required to provide proof of language proficiency. Domestic applicants with international transcripts must be evaluated through the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS) or World Education Services (WES).

Course delivery

  • participate in an off-site field placement or
  • in in-class workplace simulation

Intensive Law Clerk Program

Algonquin College also offers the Law Clerk Intensive Ontario College Diploma program, which runs in a compressed format over 42 weeks.

Fees

Tuition cost for all 4 semesters of the program is approximately $8,900 and the cost of books and supplies and various available services and programs is about $1,300 a year.
