To apply for a paralegal licence with the Law Society of Ontario (LSO), all applicants must have graduated from a Law Society accredited Paralegal Education Program, which must be from a college approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

What is the Algonquin Careers Academy Paralegal Program?

Graduates of the LSO accredited Algonquin Careers Academy Paralegal Diploma Program will have acquired the skills that are required to work as a Paralegal in legal services. Areas of law covered are:

• Constitutional and Administrative law
• Client interviewing
• Legal research
• Evidence
• Small Claims Court
• Provincial offences
• Dispute Resolution and Mediation
• Legal writing
• Legal computer applications
• Tribunals
• Immigration Law, and
• Landlord and Tenant law

Admission requirements

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma or the equivalent, OR if 18 years of age or over, you may apply as a mature student and write an entrance exam
• Ontario grade 12 English or equivalent
• Language proficiency
• Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or Immigration approval
• Assessment Interview to determine suitability for the Paralegal program

Course delivery

The In-class Diploma Program is as follows:

• 50 weeks total time to complete including a 4-week practical placement, Monday to Friday, 4 hours per day
• Offered mornings or evenings

After graduating, students will be entitled to apply to the LSO to write their Paralegal Licensing Examination.
