How does the Federal Government regulate the sale of cannabis?

Under the Cannabis Act and Cannabis Regulations, the Federal Government is responsible for setting strict requirements for producers who grow and manufacture cannabis for sale along with industry-wide rules and standards. This includes:

• the types of cannabis products available for sale
• packaging and labelling requirements for products
• standardized serving sizes and potency
• prohibitions on the use of certain ingredients
• good production practices
• tracking requirements of cannabis from seed to sale
• restrictions on promotional activities

What licences are needed to sell cannabis?

In all provinces and territories, under federal law, you must obtain licences from Health Canada and CRA if you wish to:

• cultivate (grow) cannabis for sale (on a large or small scale, or for starting materials, such as seeds and plants)
• make or producing cannabis products (on a large or small scale)
• sell cannabis for medical purposes
• conduct analytical testing of cannabis
• conduct research with cannabis
